Ambiance verbetering,  verdamping & luchtzuivering

Oplettendheid is geboden.

At AromaCare Nurse you will mainly find ready-to-use products, provided with a leaflet enclosed or instructions for use on the label. Still, it can be nice to have some general guidelines for administering aromatic oils in general. These can be found below:

Ambiance improvement, evaporation & air purification

Most essential oils evaporate easily. A large number of these oils have purifying qualities, which are valuable for purifying and refreshing rooms, but they can also have excellent effects on the respiratory tract. In addition, the diffusion of essential oils is a great way to create a pleasant scent and atmosphere. Fragrance can be spread by diffusing, atomizing or misting.

Aroma stone

These are usually made of earthenware or ceramics, sometimes provided with a glazed saucer or holder. A few drops of essential oil are dripped onto the stone. The scent or fragrance composition spreads more slowly or faster in the room, depending on the oil used. Provided they are baked pottery, the stones can be cleaned in the dishwasher.
In terms of space, you should think of a lavatory, bathroom and small (bed) room.

Car ambiance

A tissue or handkerchief with the scent can be used. Stick it between the slats of your ventilation system.
There are also small evaporators that can be connected via a USB port.

Aroma lamp with tea light

This aroma lamp is widely used. The main advantage is the ambiance it creates. The tea light gives extra atmosphere. Water is put in the reservoir. Then one or a few drops of your choice is added and the light the tea lit. The disadvantages, especially in healthcare, are the fact that they may be a fire hazard. Also the water can also evaporate (too) quickly, especially with shallow reservoirs. In addition, the oil often gets too hot and burns, as it were, especially if there is little water in the reservoir (left). Vigilance is required.

Thermosteen – elektrisch

Aroma Stream of diffuser

The use of aromasticks at a cancer centre: a retrospective audit. Complement Ther Clin Pract. 2014 Nov;20(4):203-6. doi: 10.1016/j.ctcp. 2013.11.006. Epub 2013 Nov 28).

Thermosteen – electric

These types of aroma diffusers use a ceramic plate in dry diffusion. This has the advantage that the chosen essential oil cannot burn because the plate does not get too hot. The disadvantage may be that the ceramic is fragile. The device used without water! You simply drip a few drops on the intended surface. When changing oils, you can clean it with an alcohol wipe or cotton ball with ethanol or IPA.

Aroma Stream or dry diffusers

These are electrical systems that use cold or warm evaporation. The advantage is that the scent can be spread in a somewhat larger space, (depending on the height) about 20-30 m².

Clean the device thoroughly every few months.

Large(er) diffusion systems

There are also special systems that focus on large spaces or multiple spaces. They come in a large variety of shapes and sizes, each with their own characteristics. It is difficult to indicate how many drops it is best to use. That differs per oil and strongly depends on the size of the room and the purpose you want to use.

Inhalations

The mucosa of the respiratory tract responds very well to essential oils inhalation. Research shows that. For example, inhalations are good to support the respiratory tract and mucous membranes, but also to provoke positive responses of the nervous system to odoors. In this context, think of refreshment, relaxation or offering ultimate rest, to name just a few.

AromInhaler®

A very practical and well applicable method is the AromInhaler®, a simple inhaler to prepare inhalations with customized essential oils and blends.
The AromInhalers® are unobtrusive, easy to use, hygienic and very personal. They can contain approximately 1ml (20-30 drops) of essential oil and can be used for numerous inhalation purposes, provided the right oil (combination) is chosen, very suitable for adults and children. For adults, the promotion of self-reliance is a major advantage.
Study shows that AromInhalers are increasingly used in healthcare (Dyer et al. The use of aromasticks at a cancer center: a retrospective audit. Complement Ther Clin Pract. 2014 Nov; 20 (4): 203-6. Doi: 10.1016 /j.ctcp. 2013.11.006. Epub 2013 Nov 28).

AromaPatch®

AromaPatch®

The AromaPatch® is applied as a patch onto the chest (on the skin or clothing). After removing the protective film and dropping 2-4 drops of the desired essential oil (s), the patch releases the desired scent and can be inhaled for hours. A special membrane protects the skin where necessary. The fragrance is therefore only offered via inhalation.

The AromaPatch® works for many hours, depending on the scent(s) chosen and therefore offers the patient optimal wellbeing in a very user-friendly way. If necessary, additional droplets can be added to a certain extent.

The AromaPatch® has been especially developed for patients for whom handling an inhaler is difficult or impossible. The AromaPatch® is also a solution when diffusion in the room does not have the desired result or is not individual enough.

Tissue or handkerchief of textile

A very simple application is to place a tissue near the client to offer inhalation of the fragrance composition according to this need. The main advantage of using a tissue is that it can be applied quickly, it is cheap and easy to throw away when the scent is not (or no longer) desired. When using a textile handkerchief, the advantage is that a care recipient can hold the handkerchief with him and “cuddle” or “frot” with it. That can be great in elderly care, in psychogeriatry and psychiatry. A disadvantage may be that scent or color traces may remain behind during washing, but to my knowledge no one has ever experienced this as a real problem.

Face mask

We advise to be cautious when dripping essential oils directly on the mask. It can affect the fabric it is made of, but that depends on that type of fabric. As an alternative you may add a drop of jojoba to a cotton pad in the décolleté, or rub gently on the upper lip or temples. But beware – how safe this is depends on the chosen oil (composition).

Steam bath (facial)

Steam baths, a tradition that many people also use at home, can be a very effective way to use essential oils. Drops of oils are added to a bowl of very hot water. The person holds his/her head over the bowl and covers  the head and shoulders with a towel. Because this is not possible for a bedridden patient and can often feel a oppressing, we advise to place the bowl (under supervision) on the bed table so that the steam still reaches the receiver. Steaming over a bathroom sink can also be very easy, pleasant and effective.

A widespread misunderstanding is that only hot steam is believed to be effective. But also in lukewarm to warm water, essential oils can easily unfold their potential and be effective for clearing the airways or opening the pores to purify the skin. In fact, sometimes hot steam is not the best choice. Then the blood vessels dilate too much and the mucous membranes are soon too irritated.

Use through the skin

Warning – Safe use on the skin

Some brands of essential oils, particularly those that have settled into Europe from the US, claim that their essential oils can be used on the skin undiluted. For example, there is a method that involves dripping pure essential oils, including wintergreen and oregano oils, onto the spine, often causing severe skin irritation.

These brands also claim that the brands which are in the shops on the European market are diluted or inpure, hence the hazard symbols on the labels. These brands would not have to use these symbols because their oils are therapeutic grade. That is utter nonsense. They came up with this so called grade themselves. In the meantime (end March 20201) they were condemned for that by a US court. The only reason they do not use hazard symbols is because they are circumventing European consumer protection regulations. There is a reason why these brands do not reach the shop floor, because then they would have to comply with these regulations, like everyone else.

European Labeling and Hazard Symbols – Brief Explanation

The European Union wants to protect consumers against cosmetic substances and ingredients (which include essential oils and basic substances) by applying a strict labeling law. You can agree or disagree with that, but all brands based in Europe, such as Chi, Oshadhi, Farfalla, Primavera, Pranarom, Sjankara, etc. must comply with that for oils that are so concentrated as essential oils are. This has nothing to do with quality, but with consumer protection.
For example, you will find information on the labels about registered allergens, substances in a product that some people are known to be sensitive to. It helps you, as a practitioner, healthcare provider or consumer, to know whether your product contains that substance so that you can avoid it in such cases.
Danger symbol with regard to the environment: in laymens language this means that if you drop enough pure undiluted essential oil into your fish tank, your fish will not be happy.
Flammability Hazard Symbol: Some oils will ignite under some conditions. That is good to know if you want to drip pine essentiel oil on your fireplace blocks as an extra fragrant experience.
Danger symbol with regard to skin irritation: this helps us understand that undiluted use of essential oils on the skin can irritate the skin. You can agree or not, but the fact remains that many essential oils are so powerful that they can cause irritation if used improperly.
Hazard symbol with exclamation mark: simple symbol to warn that the oil can cause respiratory and eye irritation when used undiluted and should be handled with care.

Claiming that your oils are safe and therapeutically approved and therefore do not need to comply with the mandatory safety information is just (bad) marketing and does not say anything about the quality of the contents of the bottle. In my opinion, it just says that these companies are not interested in their customers or their safety and wellbeing.

MLM – Misinformation at the expense of safety

I have, and so did a few of my peers of integrity, recently contributed to a newspaper research article which was published at the beginning of January 2021. The point here is that MLM (Multi Level Marketing) companies make all kinds of claims about oils and give very unsafe advice regarding use and dosages, which are often so high that only a few people are happy – the people at the top who earning enormous sums from it. The article is in Dutch only, sorry.

Using cautiously is the key to successful use of essential oils.

Essential oils are, by the nature of the product, very powerful natural tools, which must be used with care, knowledge and skill. If you are not trained in this, seek guidance from someone who is, such as a thoroughly trained and experienced aromatherapist.

Crème, bodylotion of gel

Masker of (leem)pakking

Skin application

There is quite a lot of research available these days on the absorption of active ingredients such as essential oil molecules through the skin. One can focus on the skin itself, such as promoting its regenerative capacity or strengthening the skin’s barrier.

One can also focus on promoting the function of the muscular system, the blood or lymph circulation, using skin applications as port of entrance.

In the case of (seriously) illness, or when dealing with the elderly, babies and children, we must exercise the necessary caution in the choice and dosage of aromatic materials and essential oils.
Dosages should be adjusted according to purpose, age, medical history and other individual characteristics, such as sensitive skin or respiratory tract, etc.

Purchase advice:

Do not buy an essential oil without an oil-specific leaflet with at least areas of application, dosage recommendations and notes on any possible contraindications. In Europe, the listing of medical claims on essential oils is prohibited, but general information, which is specific to the oil, should be mentioned the leaflet or be available from the supplier. Buy from a company whose employees know how to advise the aromatics and who keep up with their skills and knowledge and the lates available (scientific) data.

Cream, body lotion or gel

Essential oil usually mixes very well with an unscented cream, body lotion or gel.

Neutral base cream

Essential oil of your choice is added to neutral base cream. A good neutral – ulscented – base cream is preferably free from paraffin and parabens. Ideally, it should also be possible to blend in up to 10-20%  aromatics of your choice losing its stability. Think of calendula infused oil, hydrosols, but also fatty plant oils or aloe vera gel, to name just a few.
More or less neutral creams or body lotions from the drugstore can usually only be supplemented with a some essential oil of your choice. If you would also add fatty oil or aqueous extracts such as hydrolates, the cream or body lotion will usually become unstable and disintegrate. There is no way of reversing that.
Creams and body lotions have a wide range of applications. After washing, showering or bathing, a body lotion can be an extra nourishing blessing for the skin. You can also massage reasonably to well with many body lotions.

Skin gel

Skin gels are excellent when you want to combine fast absorption with an additional cooling action. That is why I also advise preparation with aloe veragel for a diversity of goals that could benefit from these actions.

Mask or (clay) poultice

Active ingredients can be introduced into the skin via a mask or poultice. The face mask is most popular. Think of a mask for impure skin or inflammation. As a rule, we use white clay powder as a base for many indications.

Massage oil

Depending on the indications, contraindications and wishes of the person receiving the massage, add one to a few drops of essential oil to some neutral base oil, which itself can also consist of various aromatics base oils. For example, the addition of St. John’s Wort infused oil is recommended for muscle and joint, the infused oil of marigold (Calendula) is especially suitable for vulnareble skin and sesame oil can warm and envelop  wonderfully.

Rub with skin oil

A (combination) of base oil(s) is supplemented with an essential oil or combination thereof. Unlike massage oil, the rub-in oil is usually only rubbed locally for a short time on the desgnated area and can be an alternative if massage isn’t suitable in the given situation.

Kompressen

Compresses

The healthcare professional may also work with compresses. For this aromatics can be added to the compress water with the aid of a good emulsifier. However, it is often more practical and cost effective to prepare a rub-in or massage oil that is either rubbed or massaged into the area beforehand or directly after the compress has been taken off.
An exception are interventions with cool or cold compresses. In those cases it makes more sense to add active ingredients to the water. Compresses of, for example, fresh aloe vera gel can also be very effective. Using white clay is also a possible application.

Showers and washes

When taking showers and giving washings, we can use a neutral product to which essential oils are added, for example for relaxation or stimulation, as a skin or hair cleanser. The essential oils should be quickly absorbable when showering because the product is also quickly rinsed off.

To bathe

Bathing can be a very pleasant and effective way to work with essential oils, to relax or activate, or to support our wellbeing in a variety of ways. Think of the function of joints and muscles, the digestive tract or to help balance body, mind and soul. They are suitable for all ages, for babies and children, but of course also for the elderly. Of course it is important to do this safely. That is why essential oils should never be added neat on the water, but first dissolved in an emulsifying agent – which enables the connection between water and oil – such as a designated emulsifyer, an unscented bath oil or a full-fat cream.

PS: regular milk, honey or salt are insufficiently safe emulsifiers.

Safety when using hot water

The (usually) warm water promotes the absorption of the essential oils by the skin. This also means that you have to dose carefully, especially when it comes to coumarin-rich oils. These are substances that are very relaxing but at the same time can irritate the skin when added to warm water, such as citrus oils and the oil of pines or those from coniferous trees.
Furthermore, essential oils should of course always be added first to a neutral bath or shower product or other good emulsifier, as mentioned above.
When bathing, add the product to the bath water after filling the bath. Bathing for about 10-15 minutes usually already gives an optimal effect of the essential oils.

Oral intake of essential oils

I am often asked if one can take essential oils internally. American brands that sell their expensive oils here in Europe following a kind of pyramid and “tupperware” party-like construction, recommend taking undiluted oil in a glass of water. Don’t!

Your mucous membranes will not be happy about doing that. The oils often do not go any further than the oral cavity and pharynx and your eoesophagus. The mucosa are very sensitive to that. Regular intake of pure, undiluted essential oil in (or rather, floating on) a glass of water can severely irritate the mucous membranes of the mouth, pharynx and oesophagus, often leading to blisters and permanent scarring.

Safe ways to take essential oils, preferably as prescribed by a trusted expert, may include:

  • Add to fatty plant oil and fill a capsule.
  • Add to a tincture with at least 50% alcohol.
  • Process in a suppository.

We work with essential oils in gels for oral care. For this we blend them with other base oils in a “food grade” aloe vera gel. This way and well diluted, they are therapeutically effective and maximum safety is guaranteed. Do you want to learn how to do that? Then follow a training with us at Kicozo.

If you want to get started to use essential oils for others than yourself, then follow a well respected extensive training with a brand independent expert, especially if you work in healthcare and you are responsible for the safety and comfort of vulnerable patients (and their loved ones) .
